Building Brand, Community and Customer Loyalty: An Interview With Gillian Muessig (Part 1)
By Penny C. Sansevieri | Huffington Post
You and I met at the Online Marketing Summit. At that time you talked about the importance of creating a community. Can you talk about that a little bit?Gillian Muessig: Yes. The concept that I was talking about was about creating a community around their brand, the idea, the products they serve; but far more importantly, around the people that work in that business itself. We have always had folks who are "brand evangelists." People like Coke; if you go onto Facebook, they will say "Yes, I like Coke"; but they didn't put the "yes" on Pepsi. Then that is it, the engagement ends.

By Scott Vaughan | Create Your Next Customer
I just came back from Online Marketing Summit (affectionately called OMS), a gathering of 1,500 digital marketers in San Diego. Besides the mostly perfect weather, it was a deep dive into all things digital marketing. This was the fourth OMS I've attended, but my first since my company, UBM TechWeb, acquired the OMS conference and brand in September 2011.Between the conversations, sessions and tweets/social media, it was a fast-paced 3 days. A few topline observations about the pulse I picked up about the state and future of digital marketing, focusing on search, social, and content marketing.

At this past weeks' Online Marketing Summit, Social Media Examiner founder Michael Stelzner had no qualms about providing great content for free - "If you can figure out a way to solve people's problems for free, you will become a champion of the world," he said during Wednesday's session. Eventually, he claims, this will help to build a community centered around your brand, which will attract more investors and advertisers (higher number of readers is the ultimate incentive, after all).

At The M Resort Casino, Marketing Success Is No Gamble
By Mitch Wagner | The CMO Site
Display ads are the resort's most effective online channel, followed by search advertising, said Andjelika Martin, M's Web marketing and development director, who spoke with The CMO Site at the Online Marketing Summit in San Diego this week."I know for most people it's the other way around," Martin said -- search more effective than display. Martin attributes display advertising success to effective use of graphics, paying particular attention to ensuring the graphics look good when scaled down 25 percent for viewing on mobile devices. M's ads always include a call to action: Book now for the hotel, and find out more for the restaurant, for example.

Why You Should Fire Your Social Media Marketing Manager

I recently hosted an all-day boot camp on the fundamentals of digital marketing at Online Marketing Summit in San Diego. During the social media marketing section, I explained to a somewhat confused audience that they should all consider firing their Social Media Marketing Managers. The reason is simple: the job description is inherently flawed. Based on my experience, what companies truly need to hire, in order to maintain relevance in the new Millennium, is a Social Media Evangelist.
